How to break your way into advertising

Advertising has a way of breaking into most aspects of everyday life, and that means there are a lot of people on the outside looking in and saying, ‘I’d love to do that!’ It’s also a very competitive field, so many of these people find that they don’t quite know how to get their foot in the door to make a lasting impression. Often, it’s a simple case of looking in the right places and taking opportunities when they come, but what if you don’t know where or how to look? You’ve heard the phrase, ‘It’s not what you know, it’s who you know’, and while having real talent is important, it’s impossible to get anywhere if the important people have no idea who you are. So whether you want to get into design, copywriting, social or accounts, link with people in the field, online or at events, stay up-to-date on what’s going on, and most importantly, don’t be afraid to talk to people about your ideas – they may know of an opportunity you wouldn’t have heard about otherwise.

Never stop having ideas

If you have a great idea, do it! It doesn’t matter if it’s a redesign of an existing ad or an entirely fictional product; if you don’t have anyone to make adverts for, don’t let that be a reason not to make them. You’ll impress agencies a lot more with ideas you’ve actually created than by simply talking about what you’d like to do. Anything that makes your portfolio stand out is positive, so get creative and show the world what you can do.

Work your way up

Don’t waste time waiting for the perfect job role – they almost never come along. If you ask most people in a role that they love, they’ll tell you they had to work their way up from the bottom. So look for any openings in agencies, even if it’s not in the exact role that you want; you’ll get your foot in the door and earn valuable experience while you’re there. You never know, you may end up loving a role you wouldn’t have considered otherwise!

Don’t be afraid to ask
