The top social media trends of 2017 and beyond...

It goes without saying that social media is constantly changing and is entirely at the mercy of user trends. If the old ‘fifteen minutes of fame’ saying refers to the ever-changing world of tabloid newspapers then on social media, it’s more like 'fifteen seconds of fame'.

While that can mean it’s difficult for smaller, less responsive brands to stay ahead of the curve, we find the activity and change exciting at Denfield and are always on the lookout for the next big trend. To help you manage your social channels more effectively, we’ve compiled a shortlist of what we think are the biggest trends of 2017 so far:

1. Social messaging

Messaging platforms such as Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp have moved far beyond the simple replacement of traditional text messaging over the past year. And their popularity isn’t going away anytime soon. In fact, an estimated four billion people actively use social messaging apps – enough for brands to cotton on and cash in.

More and more brands use these apps as a way to connect with their customers on a much faster and more personal level, responding to queries and complaints straight away without having to place customers on hold. This year has seen huge benefits for businesses that engage with customers on social media – it’s cost-effective, scalable and promotes trust between customers and brands, which in turn creates more loyal followers.

2. Live video (authentic content)

According to Periscope’s 2016 annual recap, they saw that users watched the equivalent of 110 years of live video. Every. Single. Day. And that’s just on one platform! Many brands have already nailed the art of live video with a variety of events, giveaways and product reveals.

Users love live content because it feels so much more authentic than sparkling, high-definition product images, and it also allows them to connect with the brand in a more personal way. So if you’ve been stuck for fresh ideas to get some great engagement, why not go live?

3. Virtual and augmented reality

It started with Snapchat filters, but who knows where it will end? Will we soon be able to try on clothes or see what furniture looks like in our house, all from the convenience of Facebook? Mark Zuckerberg has already confirmed that he’s experimenting with augmented reality for the platform, so I suppose we’ll have to wait and see... whatever it is though, we’re sure it’ll be big.

4. Social eCommerce

Research from loyalty analytics company, Aimia, shows that 56% of users follow brands on social media in order to view and buy products, with Facebook being the most popular choice for purchasing items directly from the platform. At the moment, this trend is just getting started, but the numbers keep on climbing, with the help of more and more personalised adverts – and it won’t be long before it’s the next big thing.
