Hear from our talented Denfield designers about their experience at this year’s Birmingham Design Festival.
At the beginning of June, a team of Denfield designers headed to Brum for the 2024 Birmingham Design Festival (aka BDF).
With a full calendar of exciting talks, workshops, screenings and exhibitions, BDF invites Brummies and those beyond the second city’s walls to come along for a celebration and conversation about the first-class design work showcased by many talented designers.
Every year since the festival’s beginning in 2018, BDF has taken on a new theme: Forward, Truth, Colour, Freedom, Imagine…and this year, Process.
Process as a theme highlights the ever-evolving creative industry – in particular, the huge shift taking place right now, with new tech and tools that are changing how many of us work.
In the words of Team BDF: “…what better time to celebrate and explore the myriad of process, both analogue and digital, that make great creative work possible?”
The festival’s three-day schedule was jam-packed with enlightening, entertaining and exciting talks attended by some of our designers here at Denfield.
Here’s what they thought of their BDF experience…

Another smashing year at Birmingham Design Festival. Laughed, cried, made a few friends and came away feeling totally inspired.
My biggest takeaway is that even people at the top of their game are dealing with imposter syndrome, making mistakes and struggling with all the ups and downs of working in the creative industry. It both keeps you humble and makes you feel safe in the knowledge that you’re not alone.

I really enjoyed the idea of a graphic design gym, where you make sure to flex your creative muscles in a small way every day, and it doesn’t have to involve sitting at a computer.

My favourite talk from the festival was Connected by Ideas by Daniel Eatock and Michael Johnson. Johnson is a fantastic visual communicator and I found Eatock inspiring in that he explained how he keeps being creative in his everyday life, and how he finds the right balance between his career and personal life.
I’m looking forward to focusing more on the ideas that carry my work and what I’m trying to say to the world, in addition to making things look pretty.

It’s amazing how rapidly Birmingham Design Festival has expanded and become a spectacle in Birmingham, attracting people from all around. The highlight for me was watching brand titan Michael Johnson’s talk on some of his past projects. This was a particularly unique talk as he presented spontaneously with whatever project popped into his head.
