Why does your business story matter? - Denfield

Why does your business story matter?

“Oh, but AI can do that for me!” What? AI telling your story in an authentic and meaningful way that resonates with your specific audience? It’s not able to and Copywriter Rachel Welland tells us why this matters.

We now live in a world where AI can produce almost anything in seconds. Need a summary? Done. A blog? Easy. Snappy taglines? No problem. Give it a prompt and it’ll generate something that looks polished enough to publish.

Don’t get me wrong, it has some impressive moments. But when it comes to telling your story authentically? That’s where it falls flat.

Once upon a time, there was storytelling without AI

Your story isn’t a prompt. And here’s the thing: AI doesn’t know you.

It doesn’t know why you started your business, what keeps you awake at night or what makes your customers choose you over everyone else. It doesn’t understand your values, your personality or the little moments that have shaped your brand.

Those personal narratives can’t be generated – they have to come directly from you.

That’s why the content that truly resonates still comes from people. Your voice, your experiences and your perspective are what make your brand memorable. AI can imitate a style, but it can’t recreate genuine personality.

Your opening chapter

Many assume you can’t spot AI-written content anymore. We disagree.

Our proofreading team often says they can tell almost immediately when they’ve been sent something written entirely by AI versus something crafted by our copywriters. We’re pleased to say the human version wins every time (not to toot our own horn, of course).

Think about it this way. Imagine someone asks you: “So, what’s your business all about?”

Would you hand them a generic paragraph full of buzzwords, or would you tell them why you do what you do? That’s the difference.

People don’t connect with businesses because of perfectly polished copy. They connect because they see themselves in a story. Whether it’s why you started your business, the challenge you overcame or the people behind your brand, those are the moments that create trust.

If you can’t talk openly and honestly about your business, people notice. Audiences are looking for connection, not perfection. When you combine your insights with a clear brand story and purpose, you create messaging that resonates on a deeper level. Learn more about why this matters in our ‘Not for everyone: How brands win by thinking smaller’ blog.

Generic content threatens to take over

No matter where we look, we’re surrounded by content, whether it’s blogs, emails, social media or websites – they’re all competing for our attention. And there’s something that we’ve noticed more often of late: a lot of it sounds the same.

Of course, it does depend on the purpose of the copy. If it’s not designed to start a conversation, usually it’s a bit of a tick-box exercise. The most effective brand copy has personality, allowing you to stand out for all the right reasons and be a distinctive voice in a generic-sounding world.

The triumphant return of brand personality

It’s not just your brand logo or colours that speak for your brand; unsurprisingly, your own voice – more specifically your tone of voice – plays a huge role in how people perceive your brand. It influences how customers connect with you, shapes their experience and determines whether they remember you. Consistency is key. Discover why in The Last Orders Podcast, where we explore the power of tone of voice and how it can help drive business success.

Bring back the storytellers

The brands people remember aren’t always the loudest or the biggest. They’re the ones that make people feel something. Stories build trust, they create emotion and they give customers a reason to care.

So, while AI can be used to spark ideas, speed up your workflow or tackle the blank page, you should never let it replace your voice. Your customers aren’t just buying your product or service – they’re buying into your story.
